Set in a world full of color and magic, this definitely had potential, it just didn't fulfill it. It wasn't a surprising reveal, and her chapters just disrupted the pace.Īlthough this wasn't my cup of tea, I can definitely see this making a splash. Even when the big reveal regarding her identity came up, the most emotion I could bring was a blink. Both Ekon and Koffi needed their own perspective, there was no reason for Adiah's. Because this sets up for a sequel, I'm sure that more of the world will be established in the next book, but I doubt I will be reading it.įinally, I wasn't a fan of the multiple perspectives. So much of the worldbuilding was introduced and then glossed over, which was a huge disappointment because the world is what was so unique about this. And that constant risk of their lives ended up driving the plot, not the premise we were introduced to.Įven though I loved the world this was set in, it could've been so much better. They truly made decisions like a 12 year old boy. Ooh, shiny fruit! Must eat it! Even though they were in a deadly jungle, they still put themselves at risk constantly. I think the part when this really went wrong was the characters.

All of this had me so hyped to read the book. Things only got better when we were introduced to the semi-sentient jungle, which made for one of the best settings I've ever read. It immediately drew me in with the circus setting, and the many animals we were introduced to right off the bat. Which is such a shame because this started off so strong. This feeling didn't last though, as the story just kept getting more and more bland. As soon as I saw the cover, I knew I wanted it. I don't think I will read the second book, unless it has more things like the Greater Jungle and its mysteries. I don't mind cliffhangers, but they need to solve at least a little problem so I can find a little satisfaction in finishing the book. I am a little frustrated about what a cliffhanger this ends on! It took a bit to get into it but I finally did and then it just ends with so many loose ends! Not one thing is resolved. I think there should have been way more of that! Especially with the book that Ekon kept looking through as he and Koffi muddled their way through.

You got more of that in the Greater Jungle, which was far more interesting than the Night Zoo. Despite the Night Zoo being in the description, there is not much about it and the other animals. Her little blurbs were the best though they were a bit jarring and I couldn't figure out how she fit with the rest of the story till nearer the end. I was intrigued by the first bit with Adiah but then it switches to Koffi and Ekon and though I found it interesting with Ekon and maybe his OCD, I wanted more from Adiah. That may have just been my frame of mind but it took longer than usual for me to care about the characters. It was a bit slow in the beginning for me. For a debut, this was a fairly good book.
